Air filter for 1950 Chev truck

Can anyone help me locate the correct (or close to it) air filter for the stock air cleaner on my 1950 Chevrolet truck? The element is 6" in diameter and 1 1/2" tall. If you have a source and a part number, please let me know. Many thanks, Ron

Guess i thought they were oil bath. I have been wrong before tho.

I'm not sure when Chevrolet's great inline 6 went from oil bath to element-style air filter. I've got the element-style filter on mine, but it may be from a later motor. It sits on top of a '54 Rochester one-barrel carb, so that's probably a clue. Either way, I still need to find an element that's 6" in diameter and about 1 1/2" tall. Thanks, Ron

evans, that old should be oil bath originaly, is there no number on the filter element? if not no problem take it to carquest in the back of the filter BOOK [ go to the oldest guy you see in the store] is a chart listing every filter by demensions, they can match up one for you, if you dont have the element at all still not a problem, measure the smallest diameter where the filter should be also the largest diameter in the same spot, now, this is kind of tricky but you need to find the height of the filter inside the housing,use something like wood blocks and washers to fine tune the height, remember it is critical that the housing must seal on the filter both top and bottom, any space here and the engine will suck in unfilterd air, not good!

Didn't they have a horsehair and metal mesh filter on top of the oilbath?

The filter could be an aftermarket unit. Dry filter were invented by Kiefofer (SP) of Mercury outboard fame when he was NASCAR racing in the middle to late 50's. Dry cleaners did not start being used until about 1960. Some farm equipment did not start using dry until the late 60's or early 70's.

Go to a GOOD parts store and have them look in the size/specs in the back of a real book. Both WIX and NAPA have size charts in the old paper catalog, others should have.

Ok, I picked up a paper element from Carquest, # CFI-87373. It’s black and has a wire screen outside and looks pretty original, at lest to the untrained eye.
Now, I have a little more to say about using this element. The ID is a little to large and allows it to move around some and not center up properly. The ID measures 1.625" and the original screen is 4.5". The biggest problem with it’s 1.9" tall, where the original screen is 1.375", the .5”+ means the stud is even with the top cover or just a hair below. To cope with the stud, yet leave everything original, (remember, first do no harm), I made an extension that brings a new #10-32 stud above the cover. This is even difficult because of the old stud being even with the top cover. When you turn the new threaded portion and drill and tap the internal thread, the two meet at the top cover. It would have been better if the old stud were a little shorter. To cope with this I’m putting a rubber gasket below the element to space it up another .125”, making it a full 5/8” taller than the original. The extra height is a little more noticeable and looks, at least to me, a little out of proportion, but all in all it looks pretty good and will work fine.

I would like to know what the number of the element is, that the vendors are selling, Jim Carter (ME2381 @ $7.50) in particular comes to mind. And how well they fit the housing.

Denny: Went to your pictures and the air cleaner you've got is identical to the one I've got. Thanks for all that great info. Question: do you know if these were after-market air cleaners, or did they come stock on some of the early stovebolts? Thanks, Ron

As far as I know this air cleaner was available on early models of the straight sixes that was used by Chevrolet in the 40's & 50's. This air cleaner was listed as the dry element vs. the oil bath air cleaner.
