Can someone tell me what the round switch is for in the middle of the steering wheel on a 1939 Ford 1/2 ton pickup?

Take a look at the bottom of the steering gear box, and you will find a round can with wires coming out of it. That is your headlight/dimmer switch, operated by a rod going down the center of the tube from that winged thing in the middle of the steering wheel.
