engine swap

Is it possible to swap out the 235ci 4speed V6 engine out of my 1 1/2 ton 1948 Chevy dump truck and replace it with a small block 350 and still have the pto engage/work to dump the bed, using same transmission. Any help would be appreciated.

If your bell housing that is on the 350 will bolt to the trany {I think it will} it should work fine. If the trany will bolt to the bell housing, check the clutch on the splines of the trany. The bell housing of the 6cyl may bolt up to the 350, hard to tell with out looking at it and my memory is not what it use to be, Mike

don't forget to sledgehammer the firewall to clear the V-8 while the motors out

the pto will be fine if you keep the transmission the truck has now if not you'll need to replace with a 4 speed truck tranny out of a pickup, the real sticky part on this swap if the front motor mounts, the inline 235 has a front mount, the later 350 has side mounts, youjr options are to build mounts and use the 350's side mount locations or find the early 283 v-8's front mount and bolt it up to the front of the 350, i seem to have a dim memory of a problem with using too long a bolt with these causing innerference with something on these but dont remember if it was with the fuel pump rod or what you might look in so cal pickups web site to se if they have a newer mount made up now for this swap or not they may have a solution

NO V-6 in 1948. It was a in-line 6

If this was my vehicle, (and please remember that it is NOT) and you have to have the 350, replace your current tranny with a larger truck tranny from something more current. That way you can put a PTO on it and you don't have to worry about the weakness of the present tranny.
A modern tranny will not cost much from a salvage yard.

Just wondering, the 350 has two 3/8 bolt holes tapped on each side of the front of the block, two near the fuel pump, and two on the opposite side. Can these be used to mount a plate for a front engine mount?

Would anyone know the specs or rather performance numbers of the 235ci inline 6. Horse power, torque, etc. What would have been the top speed of a 1948 1 1/2 ton loadmaster dump truck.

I can only go back to 1955 for specs.
1955: 123hp @ 3700 RPM, 200 @ 2000 torque, 130 comp.
1956: 140hp @ 4200 RPM, 210 @ 2400 torque, 140 comp.
1957: same
1958: 135hp @ 4000 RPM, 217 @ 2000 torque, 145 comp.

Specs are from Motors Truck Repair Manual for the 235 engine.
