I have a 4wd JD 750 compact that I use for blowing snow in the winter. This winter has been about as much ice as snow, and traction is becoming a problem. I"m thinking I want to chain "er up before next winter.

It has 9.5x24 rears. I checked tractortirechains.com and found a pair of double rows for $185 which seems pretty reasonable.

I think doubles make sense as they"re less likely to fall down in between the lugs and become useless.

Two questions:

1. Do chains tend to tear up the lugs on tires? It"s got a brand new set of Firestones on it and I"d hate to tear "em up. And,

B) Got a better price/source for chains?

I don"t think the chains tear up the tires.Make sure you put the smooth side of the crosslink hooks towards the tire. But spinning on the ice/gravel without them will tear up tires. They make special chains for ag lug tires that usually have two of the cross links hooked together at midpoint with a ring. Is this what you are looking at ? We bought our chains at a local tire shop.

Yeah, it has ag tires on it. I'll call the place I got the tires through and see what they have.

Hadn't thought about that, thanks for the reminder.

Price seems fine to me, but I generally make my own chains up. Buy the side and cross chain by the foot, J-Hooks by the box and then the clasps for the end. Cut the chain to length with the torch and throw them together.
I use 3/8" chain throughout... and I doubt I could make them for that money.... but I can replace the cross chain when the time comes.

The Duo-trac chians that you're looking at work pretty good. However, if you're going down the road with them, they're NOT the answer. They're rough and the wear fast. That's why I make my own up with straight cross chain.
I don't think they'll tear the tires up, or not much anyhow... but there comes a point where you need to ask if you want to move on ice or save the tires...
Double Diamond makes a good full coverage forestry SPUR chain that will protect the tires, but those are not 185 buck chains... not even close.
