Hi Guys,

I have a JD 5210 and the right rear wheel begins to seize up after driving a few hundred yards. The local dealer says they had problems with the brake pistons not returning after depressing. The remedy is replacing some seals and springs in there. Have any of you guys ever done this? How big of a job is it? I like to try to save money where I can, yet, I don"t want to be foolish trying to save a buck. Thanks, Dan

If you go to this link and put "5210" in your model search you can see the parts breakdown.

Did They specify if it was the piston & springs in the master valve or inside the axle housing?

I got a hunch they are talking in the pedal master valve assy.

Haywood, thanks for the reply. I went to the site you recommended and it"s great. I"ll bookmark it for future needs. They didn"t say which springs & pistons may be a problem. He said he"s seen this problem before with the 5210s and he knows what is needed. He"s going to make a parts list and get me a price and then one for labor. I"ll bet it"s something I can do myself. I"ve been restoring tractors for a year now and I"m capable of doing it, but, I don"t have a manual. They want (get this) $300 for a service manual. Can you believe that? Thanks again. You"ve been a tremendous help. Dan

Sure Dan, Glad to help. thinking maybe the springs are weak in the foot valve not returning the spool like it should..another hunch.

I worked for a Kubota dealer and many years with a IHC Truck dealer.

$300 sounds like a lot of money for a good Manual until you weigh in the alternative then it doesn"t seem so bad. If you plan to have the tractor for a long time it would still be worth getting. Especially for a 5210 model tractor.

Just some more friendly advice from a Mechanic who used to make estimates for repairs and deliver bad news......and sometimes good news.:<}

Dan,
my friend had to R&R the rear axles on his 5310 to replace a spring to stop brakes from dragging.

Dan,
A friend of mine has a 5310 that the brakes were dragging. The cure was to R&R rear axle assembly and replace a weak spring. The problem on his wasn't in the pedal or valve.

Just got a call from the JD Service Mgr. The cost to fix it is over $1,000. Only $168 are for parts. The rest is labor. He said the book says it's a 12 hr. job. So, I bit the bullet and ordered the book and parts and will do it myself. Pray for me guys!!!! Dan

You'll do OK...Not to tough a job, a cherry picker or overhead hoist comes in handy to lift off the axle housing. I did a similer job on a Ford 4000 for a leak. I had to pull the axles and housing.

Finese helps as the parts are to heavy to muscle about.

Take some pictures of your repair and post them if you can.....:<}

Dan,
I live in a Sand Flat. It's 1/2 way between Cleburne and Grandview. Yep the JD dealer in Hillsboro isn't afraid to charge for repairs but I suppose all of them are similar.

Hi Jim,

Looks like we're neighbors. You're right about the dealers being expensive. However, this JD dealer here is better than the Kubota dealer about pricing.

While you"re at it. See if you can check the axle bearings. Doubt there is a problem, but you can never be too sure.

Dan,
Bobby at Tipton's will do you right. IMHO Kubota's are pricey to repair.

BTW my nephew did manager the JD dealership in Hillsboro until my ex-sister-n-law sold out to Brazos Valley.

I'm glad we're getting some much needed rain. Custom hay baling looks brighter.

Jim
